Ian Macdonald is Head of Private Client and advises on estate planning including complex wealth structuring, trusts and tax planning. Ian has worked on a large number of substantial estates, on the reorganisation and variation of trusts and the structuring of family businesses as well as preparing wills for every personal and family circumstances.

Represented Scotland in the Worldwide Council of STEP from 2008 to 2022 and chaired STEP's Professional Development Committee from 2019 to 2022.

Presented seminars and written articles for legal, professional and general journals and publications. Joint consulting editor of the first edition of the STEP Guide for Advisers to Family Businesses and Business Families.

Personal

Born in Glasgow, educated at Hutchesons’ Grammar School and Glasgow University. Keen sailor and current flag officer of Mudhook Yacht Club. Member and past chair of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s GBR IRC Committee. Presented with an RYA Award for Outstanding Services to Yachting in 2000.
